Also known as Japanese banana palm, there is no mistaking the distinctively characeteristic architectural appeal that is provided by the large leaves. When summers are hot enough these may even produce small and edible green fruits. This tender palm is suitable for growing in borders in milder parts of the UK. During the winter months these will need protecting from colder weather. These can also be grown in large containers and moved to a sheltered spot throughout the winter months. Height: 5m (16’). In very mild areas, grow Musa in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from strong winds. In frost prone areas, Banana plants are best grown in containers of soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3, which can be moved to a warm frost-free greenhouse or conservatory in winter.
Feed weekly and water regularly throughout the growing season in spring and summer. Reduce watering in autumn, allowing the compost to partially dry out. As temperatures begin to fall, move container grown plants to a warm conservatory or greenhouse, and maintain a minimum temperature of 5C (41F). Plants grown outdoors should be wrapped with a protective layer of straw and hessian to protect them from cold winter weather.
