Petunia hybrida 'Purple Tower' comes straight from T&M's own breeding programme. Long stems and astonishing vigour make this the fastest climbing petunia available from seed - easily scaling a 120cm (4ft) climbing frame by the end of the summer. Train the free-flowering stems onto a plant climbing support for a pillar of fragrant blooms, or let them spread through beds and borders as a carpet of colourful ground cover. The perfect focal point for your garden this summer! Height and spread: 120cm (48").

Sow petunias from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Lightly cover the seed with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 21-25C (70-77F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 10-21 days.

When petunia seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When petunia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant into well drained soil with shelter from strong winds at a distance of 30cm (12") apart or grow in containers in full sun. Pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage branching and form a bushier plant which will produce more flowers later on.

Feed and water petunia plants regularly, particularly during hot, dry periods. As the long stems increase in length, tie them onto a support such as a freestanding climbing frame, using soft twine to train them upwards. Pinch the stems back for a second time. Regular deadheading of petunia flowers will encourage further blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
