Photinia fraseri 'Little Red Robin' still displays bright red leaves when they first develop which then mature to dark green, and the creamy white flowers in spring show up well against this foliage, this variety, however is perfect for growing in smaller borders and even in large containers on a patio! Grow Photinia plants in a sunny or semi shaded position, in any moderately fertile, moist, well drained soil. In frost prone areas, plant Photinia next to a warm wall or in the shelter of other shrubs. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Photinia shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Photinia requires only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. If grown as a hedge, it can be trimmed up to 3 times a year, from late spring through to mid-August.
