Create an architectural statement and channel an exotic feel in your garden with this fully hardy yellow-stemmed bamboo. Holding an RHS Award of Garden Merit, Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' is a neat, upright bamboo that forms straight, narrow clumps, making it ideal for the back of the border or using as a tall privacy screen. Enjoy year-round interest from the golden yellow culms, which are often streaked with green, the pink-flushed young shoots and the dainty evergreen leaves, which make a lovely sound as they rustle in the wind. The lower leaves can be removed to showcase the stems to best effect. Height: 6m (20ft). Spread: 3m (10ft).

Height Up to 600-800cm (236-314in)

When growing Phyllostachys aureosulcata in pots, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Golden Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Phyllostachys aureosulcata spreads via underground rhizomes so is best given space to grow; alternatively, surround the roots with a barrier to restrict the plant’s spread.
Feed and water bamboo plants regularly, particularly when grown in containers. Repot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Once bamboo plants are established, thin out any weak, damaged or unwanted canes in spring, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.
