This dwarf Ninebark has highly intricate and attractive leaves and flowers. New leaves of Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Devil' emerge bright red and then mature to deep burgundy by summer. Gorgeous clusters of small pink flowers bloom in June, and contrast wonderfully with the dark foliage. As late summer approaches they are replaced by attractive fruits. It is a very low maintenance plant, making it ideal for a garden where time for gardening is limited. Height and spread: 1.2m (4’).

Flowering Months
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Physocarpus plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Ninebark requires little attention. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless seedheads are required for late season interest. Physocarpus opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and may be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size. On mature plants cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth.
Plant Physocarpus in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Physocarpus plants prefer an acid to neutral soil but will tolerate more alkaline soils. Incorporate organic matter such as well-rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting. Plant ninebark bareroots at the same depth as they were previously planted. Backfill the planting hole, gently firm down, and water well to settle the soil.
