Pieris japonica makes a superb, large specimen shrub for areas with acid soil. Its most striking feature is the new foliage which emerges an eye-catching bronze-pink colour, maturing to dark, glossy green throughout the summer. Cascading pendants of white bell-shaped flowers make a showy display from March to May, attracting attention from pollinating insects. This magnificent evergreen shrub has a dense, rounded habit that provides excellent colour and structure all year round. Commonly known as the Lily of the Valley Bush, it makes an excellent choice for a large border or woodland garden. Height: 4m (13’). Spread: 3m (10’).

Grow Pieris plants in a sunny or partially shaded position, in a moderately fertile, rich, well drained and acidic soil. Alternatively grow Pieris in large containers, using ericaceous (acidic) compost.

Whilst your Pieris plants are young, they may require some winter protection. As they become established, you will find that Pieris plants will need very little pruning. After flowering, you can trim them to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth. Caution: harmful if eaten.
