  • First early

An early bulking, heavy cropping variety for your first crop of the season! The rounded, white skinned and fleshed tubers are quick to produce 'baby new potatoes' with a firm waxy texture. Potato 'Rocket' has good all-round disease resistance including golden eelworm, and is easy to grow in the ground or in potato bags. Height and spread: 60cm (24"). Tuber size: 35/45mm.

Harvest Months
If risk of frost threatens, protect emerging shoots by drawing some soil over the top of them. When shoots reach 20cm (8"), mound up soil around the shoots leaving just a few cm showing. Repeat this process after a further 3 weeks. During the growing season, weed between rows and keep plants well watered during hot periods. First early crops can be harvested 10 weeks from planting when the foliage begins to turn yellow and die back.

Plant first early potato crops from the end of February. Avoid planting in soil where potatoes have grown for two years in succession as this will increase the risk of disease. Prior to planting, set the seed potatoes out in a cool, bright position (10°C) to allow them to sprout. This process is called 'chitting'.

Prepare the planting area in a sheltered position in full sun on moist well drained soil. Dig in plenty of well rotted manure. Plant potatoes in rows at spacing of 30cm (12"). Rows should be set out 60cm (2') apart. Place the seed potatoes into 10cm (4") deep trenches and backfill the soil to refill the trenches. Where space is limited, try growing Rocket potatoes in potato bags on the patio. If risk of frost threatens, protect emerging shoots by drawing some soil over the top of them.
