Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

One of the most popular of early spring flowering trees, well deserving of its RHS Award of Garden Merit. This Japanese ornamental apricot makes a gorgeous small tree, bursting into a flurry of blossom much earlier than Japanese cherries and remaining compact enough for small spaces and even large containers. In late February to March, the bare branches of Prunus mume ‘Beni-Chidori’ are adorned with masses of deep, reddish-pink single flowers. The almond-scented blossom attracts a host of beneficial pollinators, making it a great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. In autumn the mid-green glossy foliage takes on yellow and orange tints. The shrub-like proportions of Prunus mume Beni-Chidori make it ideal for adding a burst of very welcome early colour in a sheltered courtyard or sunny patio where space is at a premium. Height and spread: 2.5m (8.2ft) in 20 years.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Plant cherry trees in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in full sun.
Water Prunus trees regularly until fully established. Ornamental cherries require little aftercare. Simply remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. When pruning cherries it is preferable to wait until midsummer to avoid the risk of ‘silver leaf’ infection. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stem.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
