Description How to Grow Delivery

A dainty and unusual fern for indoors or out. Pteris nipponica is a compact, deciduous fern with slender stems and finger-like fronds, each one adorned with wavy edges and a creamy-white central stripe. Pteris nipponica has a graceful, creeping habit, making it perfect for cascading over a border edge, container or trough.

This half hardy fern makes a lovely specimen for a sheltered terrace, courtyard or coastal garden where it will be protected from frost, or grown in a container and brought under cover over winter. It can also be grown indoors as a houseplant. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height and spread: 50cm (20in).

This half hardy fern can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F). Grow in a summer container that can be brought under cover over winter, or in the open border in coastal/mild parts of the UK in a position where it will be protected from frost. Pteris nipponica is also suitable for growing indoors as a houseplant.

Grow in partial shade in fertile, acid or neutral soil in a position that is reliably moist and cool. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established.
