Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Rhododendron ‘Dusty Miller’ forms a compact, rounded, evergreen shrub with dark, silvery green leaves. From May to June, bright pink buds open into clusters of pale, creamy-pink, funnel-shaped flowers flushed with rose pink at the edges. The flowers fade to cream.

This superb Yakushimanum hybrid is perfect for small gardens with lime-free soil and for container planting in small growing spaces such as courtyards and terraces.

Yakushimanum Rhododendrons are fully hardy, tolerate full sun, have a usefully rounded, compact habit and are slow-growing, remaining small for years. Despite their small proportions, they are reliably floriferous, sporting large, showy flowers. They are also renowned for their good health - an advantage that is partly due to the silvery hairs that cover the foliage, providing a barrier against pests and diseases. All of this has made Yakushimanum rhododendrons extremely desirable.

This gorgeous Rhododendron injects glamour into shady corners of the garden or areas around the house. It is compact enough for a large container or planted into a small garden border in lime-free soil. Its dense evergreen foliage provides a presence throughout the year whilst its luminous, showy blooms deliver spring impact, illuminating areas in sun or shade. Long-lived, it provides colour from May to June for decades with little to no maintenance required. Height and spread: 60-100cm (24-39in).

We list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
