If you thought Azaleas were just for spring, think again! The Encore series are compact shrubs with big ambitions - flowering not just in spring but again in autumn too – rewarding the smallest spaces with maximum interest. In spring, Rhododendron Encore Patio Trio bursts into an exuberant display of trumpet-shaped blooms followed by a second flush in autumn adding interest just as other plants are beginning to wane. Bushy, semi-evergreen, glossy foliage, provides year-round interest, forming a pleasingly rounded mound that makes a neat subject for containers. In autumn, the leaves often take on deep purple tones, and in cold locations Rhododendron ‘Encore’ will lose some foliage during the winter months, with fresh, glossy leaves taking their place in spring.

Perfect for patio pots, balconies, or small borders, this low-maintenance beauty boasts greater cold tolerance than previous reblooming azaleas as well as good resistance to summer heat. An effortless choice for any garden. Height and Spread: 50cm (20in) to 90cm (35in).

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.

Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
