Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Deep purple buds open into generous trusses of lavender-pink flowers dusted with rusty red spots, the flowers fading to pink as they age. The luminous pink blooms of Rhododendron ‘Roseum Elegans’ stand out beautifully against a backdrop of dark green, leathery foliage.

Rhododendron ‘Roseum Elegans’ is an old hybrid developed in the 19th century by the famous Waterer breeders at Knaphill Nursery. It makes a superb evergreen, specimen shrub for lighting up shady spots in acid, woodland-type borders where it provides colour from May to June. Its dense evergreen foliage also makes it ideal for windbreaks or hedging screens. Height: 2.25m (7.4ft). Spread: 2.5m (8.2ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
