An outstanding black elder with rich, dark foliage and beautifully contrasting light pink flowers in early summer. Forming a large shrub or small tree, Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Black Beauty' is a fantastic addition to mixed borders and works well with any colour scheme! Clusters of black elderberry fruits appear from late summer which are attractive to birds and other wildlife. Easy to grow and tolerant of most soils, this deciduous shrub copes well with hard-pruning, making it easy to manage in any sized garden. Height and spread: 5m (16').

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Sambucus plants thrive on any moist but well drained soil, even coping in shallow, chalky conditions. Choose a position in sun or dappled shade.
Feed and water Elder plants until well established. Sambucus requires little maintenance but may be pruned in spring to restrict its size to the space available. If necessary, Elder plants will respond well to hard pruning, which promotes plenty of fresh growth.
