Sambucus nigra 'Haschberg'

Enjoy your own Elderberry jam, wine, champagne and cordials with this heavily fruiting Sambucus. This Austrian selection is favoured by commercial orchards for its heavy crops of large, black-purple berries. As well as providing an abundance of fruit, Sambucus nigra ‘Haschberg’ is great for wildlife. In May/June, fragrant umbels of white flowers attract beneficial pollinators to the fruit garden and can be used to make elderflower cordial and champagne. The berries that follow in August/September make excellent jams, desserts and wines, as well as being enjoyed by the birds.

Sambucus nigra ‘Haschberg’ is a fast-growing shrub with strong, upright stems clothed in green leaves. It can be planted as a single specimen or incorporated into an ‘edible hedgerow’. Self-fertile, resilient and disease-free, it copes with most soils including heavy clay. Height: 4m (13ft). Spread: 2m (6.5ft).
