Sambucus nigra 'Laced Up' offers the same dark, feathery foliage as similar varieties but in a narrow, upright form that is ideal for the smaller garden. Its dark colour also creates valuable depth, making small spaces appear bigger.

The finely divided, near black leaves make a dramatic statement, particularly when contrasted with lighter foliage, and offer the perfect backdrop to flattened umbels of pink flowers through summer. Sambucus nigra 'Laced Up' makes a good choice for wildlife friendly gardens - the flowers are highly attractive to pollinating insects and may be followed by shiny black berries that are enjoyed by birds. This fast-growing, unfussy shrub adapts to all soils and is reasonably drought tolerant once established. Ultimate height: 2-2.5m (6.5ft -8.2ft) Ultimate spread: 1m (3.2ft).

Grow Sambucus in any moist but well drained soil in full sun or dappled shade, plants will also survive on poor, chalky soils.

Sambucus plants require very little pruning except for general maintenance and shaping in winter. However, if they become too large after a few years, they will also respond well to hard, restrictive pruning. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
