Description How to Grow Delivery

A rare and much sought after small tree or shrub, prized for its exceptional autumn colour. Sapium japonicum does require a sheltered position to grow well, but it is well worth the effort and makes an interesting and unusual choice for a sheltered courtyard or city garden in milder parts of the UK. Also known as Neoshirakia japonica, it forms a slow-growing, densely branching shrub or tree, clothed in dark green, elliptic leaves around 7-16cm long. May/June sees inconspicuous flowers, followed by three-lobed, hanging seed capsules that explode their seeds with surprising force. However, it is the spectacular autumn foliage which is the crowning glory of Sapium japonicum. The large leaves transform into vivid shades of gold and crimson, and it has been described as one of the finest plants for autumn colour. If you have a spare spot against a warm south or west-facing wall, Sapium japonicum makes a fascinating choice and one which is bound to incite envy in curious gardeners! Height and spread: 4 m (13 ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
