Sarcococca hookeriana 'Winter Gem' is a recent introduction with a powerful sweet fragrance that will stop you in your tracks. The glossy, dark green foliage is larger than most varieties and makes a handsome contrast to the spidery white blooms, which are followed by shiny red berries that ripen to black. Commonly known as Sweet Box or Christmas Box, this evergreen shrub is a must have for winter borders bringing year round colour, scent and structure. Sarcococca is a versatile, low maintenance shrub that thrives in a good range of conditions from dry shade to damp woodland edges. Height and spread: 150cm (59").

Grow sarcococca in any moist, well drained garden soil in a sheltered position, in semi-shade or shade. Christmas box will tolerate full sun provided that the soil remains moist. Alternatively grow sarcococca plants in patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Feed and water regularly until young shrubs become established. Once established, Sarcococca will require little attention and often thrives on neglect. Pruning is not required other than to shape the plant if required, and to remove and unwanted suckers from the base of the plant.
