Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Sarracenia purpurea subsp.venosa forms short, squat pitchers that are greenish purple, sometimes turning completely purple. The lid doesn’t cover the pitcher but forms ear-like wings that curl inward and are covered in rough hairs. This species earns the name ‘venosa’ due to its highly conspicuous veins that branch in tree-like patterns over the pitcher and lids. Sweet secretions on the lip of the pitcher lure unsuspecting insects that slide down the slippery funnel, tumbling to their deaths in a pool of digestive juices at the bottom. This Sarracenia makes an unusual specimen for a greenhouse, conservatory or windowsill and an ideal gift for the botanically curious. Maximum height and spread: 50cm (20in).

1 x 9cm Potted Plant (10cm Tall) (KF3498)

Grow Sarracenia in bright light, with around 6 hours of full sun per day. They require a frost free position such as a cool conservatory, porch, or bright room indoors with a temperature of 15C (60F) – 32C (90F).

Sarracenia will need permanently moist (but not soggy) soil. This is best achieved by regular watering in a water tray throughout the growing season - avoid watering from above. Always use rainwater or distilled water, as carnivorous plants are particularly sensitive to the chemicals contained in tap water. Sarracenia do not need feeding - they will catch all of the food that they need themselves.

In autumn, Sarracenia become dormant and the pitchers begin to die back. These can be trimmed away as they die. The compost should be kept just moist throughout the winter. Resume watering, when plants start into growth again. During winter these plants require a temperature of around 5C (32F).
