Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Pendulum'

A curious form of Giant Redwood with a unique and quirky personality that is quite unlike any other specimen tree! Sequoiadendron giganteum ‘Pendulum’ is a slow-growing evergreen conifer that forms a tall, narrow pillar. The vigorous, upright trunk carries tightly pendulous branches clothed in mane-like, grey-green foliage. Mature specimens have the appearance of strange, shaggy columns, often leaning over and twisting into ghostly shapes. No two specimens are alike – branches bob and weave, giving the tree a sense of movement and a strong personality that may look a little spooky at night! Like other redwoods, the reddish-brown, fibrous bark becomes spongey with age.

Sequoiadendron giganteum ‘Pendulum’ makes an intriguing specimen as a stand-alone tree. It can also be planted into avenues, its weeping branches creating a cathedral effect of soaring columns shrouded in drape-like foliage. This is probably a love or hate plant, but there’s no denying that this extraordinary living sculpture makes a unique stamp on the garden landscape that cannot fail to be noticed.
