A small shrub, popular for its glossy evergreen leaves and dense clusters of red buds in autumn and winter. As the weather warms in spring, the white, highly fragrant flowers burst open, attracting bees and filling the air with a delightful sweet scent. Preferring a partly or fully shaded position, Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ makes a fantastic low-maintenance addition to woodland gardens, borders or patio containers, where it will add interest to your garden all year round. Feed and water Skimmia shrubs regularly until fully established. Once established, Skimmia requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in mid-spring. If more shaping is needed, lightly cut back shoots after flowering in mid-summer. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
Plant Skimmia in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil; it will grow happily in improved clay soils. Skimmia prefers a neutral to acid soil but will grow in improved chalky soils. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting. Choose a final position in partial shade or full shade; full sun can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively plant Skimmia in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Caution: Fruits are harmful if eaten.
