With even bigger, furry ‘Bunny’s Ears’, it is hard not to resist stroking this tactile plant. Stachys byzantina ‘Big Ears’ sports larger leaves than other varieties and taller flower spikes. The evergreen leaves are a little greener than smaller Stachys, but still have the same soft, felty covering. Thick, square stems support woolly clusters of small pink flowers held in whorls. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators. This drought and heat tolerant plant makes a good choice for dry, sunny borders where it provides weed-suppressing, evergreen groundcover, that spreads by creeping, rooting stems. Superb for Mediterranean or gravel gardens. Height: 60cm (24in). Spread 75cm (29in).

Grow Stachys in any well drained soil that won’t sit wet over winter. Choose a position in full sun.

Stachys needs little attention once established. Trim back untidy foliage in autumn. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps in early spring to maintain plant vigour.
