Plant strawberry plants in September or April in a sheltered, sunny position in well drained soil. Dig in a generous helping of well rotted manure. Plant one strawberry plant every 45cm (18”) in rows spaced at 75cm (30”) apart. Spread out their roots and place them in the soil at a level where the crown of the plant is just poking above the surface. Planting too deeply may cause them to rot! Alternatively grow strawberry plants in hanging baskets or in specially designed strawberry planters for the patio.
Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season. Feed container grown plants every two weeks. Remove any runners that are produced in early summer as these will weaken the plants vigour. (They look like a long flexible stem with a baby plant at the very end). In May, place straw either side of each plant to protect developing fruit from slugs and raise fruits off of the ground. Place a net over the plants to protect your crop from greedy birds! After cropping remove netting and straw to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. Mulch strawberry plants with well rotted manure every spring. Although strawberry plants will continue to fruit in successive years, the crop will become considerably reduced and it is advisable to completely replace plants every 3 years.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
