Sweetcorn 'Picasso' is an attractive variety with bicolour cobs. It produces a mix of white and yellow kernels with a sweet, crisp, and juicy bite. Each cob will grow up to 20cm (8”) and is packed with sweet flavour. It has purple blooms and red striped stalks and foliage too which makes it a very eye-catching variety and a wonderful addition for a veggie plot. Height 200cm (79”) and spread 45cm (18”).

Grow sweetcorn plants in a sheltered position in full sun, on fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil that has been deeply dug. Prepare the soil in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Sweetcorn is wind pollinated and should grown in large blocks to assist pollination. Plant sweetcorn at a distance of 35cm (14”) apart, leaving 60cm (24”) between each row, to form a large block. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.

Water sweetcorn plants regularly until established, particularly during dry periods. Provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. Sweetcorn plants are shallow rooted so take care when hoeing to prevent root damage. Harvest sweetcorn cobs when the silky tassles at the end of the cob have turned brown. Peel back the sheath of the cob slightly and press the corn kernels with a fingernail until liquid squeezes out. If liquid is milky coloured then the cob is ripe, if clear then it is under-ripe.
