Forming a petite, upright, rounded shrub, this lilac makes a lovely selection for small gardens, mixed borders and containers. In late spring, Syringa ‘Red Pixie’ is smothered in panicles of red buds which open into deep pink tubular flowers, fading to pale pink. The flowers have an intense sweet fragrance and will frequently rebloom in late summer or early autumn. The blooms are accompanied by small, rounded mid-green leaves, lending ‘Red Pixie’ a dainty appearance that belies its tough nature. The foliage turns yellow in autumn. Syringa ‘Red Pixie’ copes with poor soils and is drought-tolerant once established. Height and spread: 1-1.5m (3.2-4.9ft).

Grow lilac plants in rich fertile, well drained, neutral or alkaline soil in full sun. Young Lilacs will benefit from a sheltered position.

Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Prune lilac bushes in winter or spring by removing any damaged, diseased or misplaced stems before lightly shaping the remaining stems. After pruning, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the shrub.
