Thompson & Morgan is delighted to work alongside the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to offer special seed collections to home gardeners. This Kew Pollinators Collection has been specially selected by The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

This hardy perennial brings height and stature to the back of borders. Its tall stems are topped with small clusters of mauve-purple flowers that seem to glow at dusk as the daylight fades. The tall stems sway with an air of tranquility that gives Verbena bonariensis an ethereal quality. This superb hardy perennial blends effortlessly into almost any planting scheme from cottage garden borders to modern courtyards. Height: 120cm (48"). Spread: 45cm (18").

1 Packet (200 Seeds) (KB7578)

Sow Verbena from February to April on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost and lightly cover the seed with vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag, maintaining a temperature of 24-27C (75-81F) until after germination which usually takes 14-21 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the compost on the dry side at all times, and water lightly as seedlings emerge. When verbena seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into trays or 7.5cm (3”) pots and grow on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors.

When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise Verbena plants to outdoor conditions prior to transplanting them outdoors in any well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Plant Verbena at a distance of 30cm (12”) apart.

Feed and water plants regularly until they are fully established. Verbena bonariensis flowers do not require dead heading. In autumn, apply a dry mulch of bark chips or straw to protect the crown of the plant throughout the winter months. Cut back the old stems when new shoots emerge at the base of the plant in spring.
