We’re always on the lookout for shrubs that retain all the best features of their larger cousins but have smaller dimensions to suit smaller gardens. Viburnum plicatum ‘Pinkimono’ is one of a series of new Viburnums that fits the bill precisely. It barely grows taller than 80-100cm but doesn’t spare on beautiful deep green leaves pared with large flat umbels of flowers from May to July. The umbels are composed of sterile buds in the centre surrounded by simple flowers that change colour from light pink to bright white. The flowers are followed by bright red berries that turn black as they ripen. This low maintenance shrub makes a rewarding choice for borders or containers. Height: 80-100cm (31-39in). Spread: 50cm (20in).

Grow Viburnum plants in a sunny or semi shaded position, in any moderately fertile, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Viburnum shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Viburnum requires little pruning. After flowering cut back stems to a healthy bud and reduce any stems that spoil the symmetry of the plant.
