The spring flowering Vinca minor ‘Atropurpurea' or the Lesser Periwinkle, has deep plum-purple flowers above evergreen foliage, making it an attractive, less vigorous plant than its larger cousin Vinca major, as its easier to confine to its allotted space. Vinca are ideal as ground cover for almost any position, perfect for suppressing weeds whether on a slope in sun or a dark, shady corner, where it is often difficult for plants to grow. Height: 20cm (8") Spread: 50cm (19").

Grow Vinca in borders, woodland gardens or on banks as ground cover, in any moist, well-drained soil which does not dry out. They cope particularly well with clay soils. Periwinkles are versatile plants and will happily grow in full sun, partial shade or full shade, although flowering will be better in sun.

Water Vinca plants frequently until fully established. Once established, periwinkle plants require little attention. Prune periwinkle in spring by cutting back hard to restrict growth.
