Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Whitecurrant ‘White Versailles’ is the earliest cropping whitecurrant. It produces heavy crops of large shiny white berries in long trusses from July.

Whitecurrants are sweeter than redcurrants and perfect for eating fresh or as an ingredient in deserts and jellies. Currants have a long cropping season and freeze well.

From the second season onwards each plant will produce over 3.5kg (over 7lb) of fruit and will keep producing for up to 10 years. Height and spread: 120cm (48"). Estimated time to cropping once planted: 4-8 months.

Whitecurrants prefer a position in full sun but will tolerate semi shade. Shelter from cold winds and late spring frosts as these conditions may damage the flowers, and reduce the yield of fruit later in the year. Grow whitecurrants in rich, moist, well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure into the ground prior to planting. Plant whitecurrant bushes between late autumn and spring, at a distance of 1.5m (5') apart and a depth of 5cm (2") lower than the soil mark on the stem. Planting whitecurrants slightly deep will encourage the production of extra stems from below ground level.

Keep whitecurrant plants well watered during dry periods, particularly as the fruits are developing. Netting the bushes will help to protect the currants from birds. Whitecurrants can be harvested from July.

Whitecurrants form fruit on 2 year old wood, so after planting the leading shoots need only be pruned by half to encourage branching. In subsequent years, reduce any new growth by half. Take care not to cut back into the previous year's wood unless removing the occasional weak or damaged stem to encourage healthy new shoots to develop. Culinary note: Whitecurrants make particularly good jellies. Suitable for freezing.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
