Pot up Agapanthus plants and grow them on in cool, bright, frost-free conditions over winter. Although hardy when mature, young Agapanthus plants require some protection throughout their first winter. Once plants are well grown in the spring and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun. To grow agapanthus plants in patio containers use a soil based compost, such as John Innes No.3.
Feed and water African Blue Lilies regularly throughout the growing season. Leave faded agapanthus flower stems intact to enjoy their architectural seed heads during autumn. When the first frost blacken the seed heads, cut the stems back to ground level. Protect plants outdoors from severe winter weather by providing a dry mulch of bark chips or straw in late autumn. Container grown plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter. Divide agapanthus clumps in spring when they become over crowded. Caution: Agapanthus is harmful if eaten, and the sap may irritate the skin and eyes.
