Aquilegia ‘Earlybird™ Purple Blue’ is a compact variety of this cottage garden staple that is ideal for small spaces, containers and the front of borders. Masses of beautiful bicolored blooms in purple and lilac-blue are held on short stems above a neat mound of attractive lobed foliage. Gently nodding with long spurs, the flowers are the epitome of elegance and are great for cutting to enjoy their beauty up close. This dwarf columbine thrives best in moist but well-drained, fertile soil in part shade. Height and spread: 20-30cm (8-12in).

Grow aquilegias in sun or part shade in any fertile, moist, well drained soil.
Columbines hybridise readily so be aware that any self-sown seedlings may not come true to type. If seedlings are not wanted, deadhead faded aquilegia flowers to prevent them self seeding. Aquilegias dislike disturbance but overcrowded clumps may be lifted and divided in spring when necessary.
