Brilliant for autumn colour, Aronia melanocarpa 'Hugin' is a small deciduous shrub which is perfect for small gardens. Clusters of pretty white flowers are produced in late spring and early summer, followed by rich black berries which can be harvested in the autumn. Known as Black Chokeberry, the fruits of this Aronia have a tart flavour when eaten raw but are delicious made into jams, compotes, or added to cakes and pies. As the fruits ripen in autumn, the leaves take on beautiful fiery shades of red and orange. Aronia melanocarpa 'Hugin' is easy to grow, even in boggy conditions and is perfect as part of a mixed border where it provides excellent seasonal interest. Height: 2m (6'). Spread: 3m (10').
