Also known as False Goatsbeard, Astilbe japonica 'Washington' produces beautiful pure white fluffy flowers on upright stems, from June to July. Combined with the green finely divided leaves, this Astilbe looks fantastic displayed in a patio container or makes an equally attractive addition to cottage garden borders and woodland gardens. Preferring lots of moisture and happy in sun or partial shade, Astilbe is great for difficult, damp spots in the garden. Height and spread: 50cm (20").

Grow Astilbe plants in rich, fertile soil that remains permanently moist. On boggy sites, plant astilbes in full sun; on drier soils choose a site in partial shade and work in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost prior to planting. Astilbe plants will thrive in a position next to a pond or stream.

Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Spent astilbe flowers can be left on the plants throughout winter as decorative seed heads. Divide over-crowded clumps of astilbe in spring when necessary, to increase their longevity. Apply a mulch around the base of the plants in spring to conserve moisture in the soil.
