Flowering Months
Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Spent astilbe flowers can be left on the plants throughout winter as decorative seed heads. Divide over-crowded clumps of astilbe in spring when necessary, to increase their longevity. Apply a mulch around the base of the plants in spring to conserve moisture in the soil.
Plant bareroot astilbes at the earliest opportunity following delivery, in rich, fertile soil that remains permanently moist. On boggy sites, plant astilbes in full sun; on drier soils choose a site in partial shade and work in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost prior to planting. Astilbe plants will thrive in a position next to a pond or stream.
