Description How to Grow Delivery

Astrantias have a delicate and stylish beauty with their unusual papery, ‘pin cushion’ flowers above handsome, palmate leaves. These moisture loving plants are perfect for shady or woodland conditions, mixed borders and cottage gardens. Astrantia ‘Star of Love’ is one of the deepest red varieties, with burgundy blooms on dark purple stems produced early in the summer and lasting for weeks. Makes a beautiful cut flower which lasts well in water or use them in a dried arrangement. Ideal for wildlife gardens as it is attractive to bees and butterflies. Height: 60cm (24in). Spread: 50cm (20in).

Astrantias are happiest in dappled shade (but tolerate almost full shade to full sun) in moist but well-drained, humus rich soil. Little maintenance is required – the plant can be cut back after the flowers have faded to tidy and encourage a fresh flush of leaf growth, or the seed heads left standing until winter to provide continued interest.
