Camellias are hugely popular low-maintenance shrubs which provide beautiful blooms from early spring, set against a backdrop of glossy evergreen foliage. Camellia 'Tricolour' is the result of a unique growing concept which gives the illusion of three flower colours on one plant. We supply you with three varieties in a single pot. As the plants mature they blend into each other to stunning effect, seemingly producing an array of pink, white and red flowers on a single plant. The evergreen leaves of this slow-growing shrub make a good foil for summer flowering perennials when planted at the back of a border, and the flowers can be cut for a vase indoors. Perfect for acidic borders, Camellias can also be grown as specimen plants in large containers of ericaceous compost. Height: 2m (6.5'). Spread: 1.5m (5'). Supplied in a 15cm pot.

Camellia plants require an acid soil. If you don't have acid soil, simply plant them in patio containers. When growing Camellia in patio containers, use a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in dappled or semi shade with shelter from strong winds. Alternatively, if you are gardening on acid soil, plant Camellia standards directly into borders in a sheltered, shaded position in moist, well drained soil.

Water regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed regularly with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch - take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
