Adding a tropical feel to your garden couldn’t be easier with Canna x generalis 'Cannova Red'. These showy, exotic looking plants are surprisingly easy to grow even in our British climate, Keep them in large pots on the patio and watch as the large, deep green leaves unfurl upwards and outwards to provide the perfect setting for the spikes of bright red blousy flowers that continue to appear right through until the first frosts of the season. Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 40cm (16").

Culinary information: Canna lily rhizomes can be eaten raw and have a taste similar to water chestnut, although they are sometimes bitter. They can also be boiled and baked, in the same way as a potato and have a similar texture and taste. For more details about edible flowers click here.

1 canna plant in 7cm pot (V73328)

Grow Canna plants in frost free conditions until all risk of frost has passed. In spring, Canna plants can be gradually acclimatised to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting them in borders, beds and containers. Grow Cannas in fertile, moist, well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position.
Feed and water Canna plants freely throughout the summer. Faded Canna flowers should be deadheaded to promote more flowers. In late autumn, when the first frosts blacken the foliage, the rhizomes should be lifted and stored in barely moist peat, in frost free conditions. Rhizomes can be replanted in spring for another fabulous display.
