This early large-flowered variety is always one of the first to brave the chilly February air. Crocus 'Vanguard' is a particularly enchanting variety with silvery lilac blooms that make the perfect companion for snowdrops. Plant them en masse for the best effect either alone or teamed up with a dark purple variety for a superb colour contrast. A great choice for planting beneath deciduous trees and shrubs or weaving through rockeries and the front or borders. Height: 10cm (4"). Spread: 5cm (2").

Grow crocus in any well drained garden soil in sun or semi shade. Spring flowering crocus bulbs should be planted during the autumn, in large clumps at a depth of 10cm (4") and at a distance of 7cm (3") apart. Alternatively grow them in containers or naturalised in grass.

Allow the strap like foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Avoid mowing areas of grass where crocus are naturalised until they have completely died back.
