If you are a garlic fanatic, then Garlic Lovers Collection (Autumn Planting) provides a tasty selection of some of our best hardneck and softneck garlic varieties to enliven every dish. Hardneck varieties provide more complex garlic flavours but do not store as long as softneck garlics. Softnecks store exceptionally well but are milder flavoured. By combining both types, you can enjoy the subtle flavour differences of the hardneck varieties by eating them first whilst feasting on the milder hardnecks well into late winter. Lovers Collection comprises:
Garlic ‘Germidour’ (Softneck) - Well-known and reliable, from French production that is well adapted to British conditions (2 bulbs).
Garlic ‘Kingsland Wight’ (Hardneck) - A perfectly formed, white skinned bulb with pink cloves (2 bulbs).
Garlic ‘Messidrome’ (Softneck) - Large white bulbs with excellent flavour for all culinary uses (2 bulbs).
Garlic ‘Eden Rose’ (Hardneck) - Outstanding hardneck garlic renowned for its superior, delicate flavour (2 bulbs).
Plant garlic in rows in any well drained soil in full sun. It is important that the soil does not become waterlogged so incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve drainage and feed the soil. On particularly heavy soils, grow garlic in raised beds. Carefully split the bulb into individual cloves. Plant each clove at a depth of 2cm (1") below the surface of the soil and 10cm (4") apart, leaving 45cm (18") between each row.
Weed rows of garlic regularly and protect crops from birds by covering them with netting. Garlic is undemanding and will only require watering during particularly dry periods. Harvest Garlic 'Extra Early Wight' from May, when the leaves begin to turn yellow, by loosening them from the ground with a trowel. Gently wash and dry garlic bulbs, then place them in a warm dry position to dry out, prior to using them.
