Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

This rare variety is a lovely twist on the ordinary white-flowered form of Hydrangea quercifolia. From July to September, Hydrangea quercifolia 'Amethyst' has creamy-white, conical flowers that slowly transform to a rich plum red as they age. The unique flower colour is set against a background of handsome oak-like foliage that takes on purple and red tints in the autumn. Oak-leaved hydrangeas are resilient, low maintenance shrubs that require very little pruning and thrive in sun or light shade. They make excellent subjects for mixed borders and or woodland areas and established specimens are more drought tolerant than mophead types. Height: 2m (6.5ft). Spread: 1.8m (5.9ft).

Hydrangea quercifolia prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea quercifolia in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
