Syringa 'Katherine Havemeyer', a beautiful deciduous lilac shrub, is the perfect, trouble-free addition to any garden. Its lavender-blue flowers are produced on a background of heart-shaped foliage and the plant requires minimal maintenance, making the spreading shrub a firm favourite in cottage garden borders. It is loved by gardeners and wildlife alike, attracting many species of butterfly, bees and beneficial insects. The wonderfully frangranced flowers appear in profusion in May and June. Height: 7m (23'). Spread: 7m (23').

Culinary information: Adding the fragrant flowers to cream cheese or even yoghurt for a hint of lemon flavour. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, Lilac plants require only occasional attention. Deadhead lilac flowers as they fade. Lilacs need little pruning except the occasional removal of misplaced or damaged stems in late winter or early spring.
Grow lilac in borders in moist, free draining, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Lilac enjoys a rich fertile soil, so dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting. Alternatively, plant lilac in large patio containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Water well after planting.
