A striking, architectural garden shrub, Mahonia aquifolium will give you year round interest. The glossy, evergreen foliage is accompanied by acid yellow spring blossom that is followed by blue-black berries in the autumn, when the leaves gain a purple flush.

Mahonia leaves are large and prickly, making them useful for security planting as they will help deter burglars and also cats. A Mahonia will spread and is ideal for planting in a shady spot, so a great addition to a woodland garden. Easy to grow and low maintenance, it is an ideal shrub for a beginner to gardening. Height: 1m (39"). Spread: 1.5m (59").

Culinary information: The ripe fruits are too acidic to eat raw but can be stewed with sugar or other fruits and made into jelly or pies. They are used to help the milder flavour of some fruits or to make a lemonade-like drink. Young leaves are simmered in water and eaten as a snack. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant Mahonia in fertile, moist, well-drained garden soil. Choose a sunny or partly shaded position, with shelter from cold winds. Mahonia is a versatile shrub which will also cope well in full shade.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young Mahonia plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Mahonia requires little pruning. Prune in mid-spring to remove any damaged, diseased or wayward shoots which spoil the shape.
