One of a fabulous group of peonies known as Itoh Peonies, which blends the exotic looks of tree peonies with the herbaceous growth habit of herbaceous peonies, giving gardeners the best of both peony worlds! Truly stunning and highly unusual creamy yellow petals are striped and flecked with raspberry pink, so that no two flowers are the same. Peony 'Lollipop' is particularly floriferous, bearing masses of gently scented blooms in summer and adding a hint of the exotic to sunny borders. These nectar-rich hardy perennials will attract bees and other pollinating insects, providing them with a plentiful food supply all season. Height: 75cm (29in). Spread: 90cm (36in). Supplied as bare root plants.

Culinary note: Petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Blooms can be floated in cocktails and punches to add decoration. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy. For more details about edible flowers, click here.

1 Bare Root Plant (80031)

Caution: All parts of Peonies are harmful if eaten. Grow peonies in sun or semi shade, in well drained soil. Peonies prefer a rich fertile soil, so add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant herbaceous peonies at a depth of around 5cm (2”) below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may delay flowering.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

Feed and water regularly until peony plants are fully established. Remove faded peony flowers and cut back old foliage in autumn. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
