Papaver orientale ‘Red Rumble’ is one of those breathtakingly beautiful perennials that is sure to draw gasps of admiration.

In May, fat, pendant buds burst into extra-large flowers with sumptuous, scarlet petals like crumpled silk. Dark blotches on the petals are complemented by a dark central boss. Each bloom spans up to 15cm across and stands tall on strong stems above clumps of finely divided, bristly foliage with a bushier habit than many other varieties. Papaver orientale ‘Red Rumble’ delivers a dramatic fanfare to the main flowering season. Cut back after its first performance to encourage a second flush of blooms. Height: 90cm (35in). Spread: 50cm (20in).

When growing Oriental Poppies, choose a sunny position in rich fertile, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply.
Deadhead faded poppy flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Cut back old foliage to ground level in autumn. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Oriental poppy in spring.
