Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
This delightful spring-flowering shrub is smothered with small yellow flowers in April and May, which have a delicious sweet fragrance. Ribes odoratum is also known as the Buffalo Currant or Clove Currant due to its scent. Forming a medium sized shrub, the leaves turn to deep shades of red and purple in autumn for an extended season of interest. Ribes odoratum also produces edible shiny black fruits which are slightly larger than blackcurrants, with a sweeter, clove-like flavour. This hardy deciduous shrub is excellent for mixed borders and informal gardens. Height and spread: 2m (6.5').

Culinary information: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Click here for more details about edible flowers.

Ribes prefer well drained soil in a sunny position. Growing Ribes odoratum in a semi-shaded spot may result in fewer flowers and berries. Plant Flowering Currant shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots and incorporate lots of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil when you backfill the planting hole. Water well to settle the soil.
Young plants will need regular watering throughout the growing season until they become fully established. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in the Spring. Ribes are a low maintenance shrub requiring little pruning. Cut back stems to a healthy bud after flowering and take away a fifth of older stems to ground level.
