The spectacular fine cut leaves of Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Black Lace' are dark purple that then change to deep red in the autumn. In the summer, the shrub is covered in lovely clusters of small scented pink flowers, which then are later replaced by glossy black berries, that are a great food source for garden birds. It is a great hardy, deciduous shrub for borders and is a good choice for a wide range of gardens including; woodland gardens, wildlife gardens, cottage gardens and also contemporary gardens. This ornamental Elder has been bred from our native Elder, and is very easy to maintain and does well in most conditions, but a sunny position will create the optimum leaf colour. Height: 3m (10’). Spread: 2m (6’).

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. The flowerheads are commonly used in infusions, making a very common drink and can be made into a syrup or cordial. They can also be dipped into a light batter and then fried to make elderflower fritters. Both flowers and berries can be made into elderberry wine. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sambucus plants thrive on any moist but well drained soil, even coping in shallow, chalky conditions. Choose a position in sun or dappled shade.

Feed and water Elder plants until well established. Sambucus requires little maintenance but may be pruned in spring to restrict its size to the space available. If necessary, Elder plants will respond well to hard pruning, which promotes plenty of fresh growth.
