This ornamental Elder is a superb shrub for small and medium sized gardens. Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Black Tower' is dense and compact, with an upright column like habit, making it ideal for smaller garden borders, or as a stand alone specimen. Its leaves emerge green in colour, then change to deep burgundy. In summer the bush is covered in clusters of small pink flowers carried in large panicles. Dark glossy berries grow in late summer and provide a great food source for garden birds in autumn. Height: 2.5m (8’). Spread: 1.2m (4’).

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. The flowerheads are commonly used in infusions, making a very common drink and can be made into a syrup or cordial. They can also be dipped into a light batter and then fried to make elderflower fritters. Both flowers and berries can be made into elderberry wine. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sambucus plants thrive on any moist but well drained soil, even coping in shallow, chalky conditions. Choose a position in sun or dappled shade.

Feed and water Elder plants until well established. Sambucus requires little maintenance but may be pruned in spring to restrict its size to the space available. If necessary, Elder plants will respond well to hard pruning, which promotes plenty of fresh growth.
