For an unusual house plant that will certainly draw attention, look no further than Sarracenia leucophylla. Commonly known as the Pitcher plant, this carnivorous plant produces slender, deeply veined pitchers that colour to crimson red at their open mouths. The pitchers lure insects to the nectar offered within each vase, but once inside the insect becomes trapped, and is slowly digested by the plant. This intriguing house plant makes a fascinating specimen for a cool conservatory, frost free porch, or bright room indoors. Height and spread: 60cm (24").

Please note: Some houseplants are toxic or harmful to pets if ingested. If you believe your pet has consumed a poisonous plant then seek veterinary attention immediately. Take a sample of the plant with you.

Sarracenia will need permanently moist (but not soggy) soil. This is best achieved by regular watering in a water tray throughout the growing season - avoid watering from above. Always use rainwater or distilled water, as carnivorous plants are particularly sensitive to the chemicals contained in tap water. Sarracenia do not need feeding - they will catch all of the food that they need themselves.

In autumn, Sarracenia become dormant and the pitchers begin to die back. These can be trimmed away as they die. The compost should be kept just moist throughout the winter. Resume watering, when plants start into growth again. During winter these plants require a temperature of around 5C (32F).

Grow Sarracenia in bright light, with around 6 hours of full sun per day. They require a frost free position such as a cool conservatory, porch, or bright room indoors with a temperature of 15C (60F) – 32C (90F).
