A lovely tall stemmed, bicolour sunflower! Each large golden bloom of Sunflower 'Helios Flame' is embellished by a dark mahogany ring at its centre that makes this a particularly eye catching variety. The tall, sturdy stems each support a single bloom - perfect for bringing height to the back of sheltered borders and wildlife gardens. Like all sunflowers, this superb variety makes an excellent cut flower with a good vase life. Height: 180cm (71"). Spread: 50cm (20")."I love trying out as many of our new seed varieties as possible. When we launched Sunflower Helios Flame, I was eager to give it a go. Every plant I grew put on a brilliant show of flowers. At the end of the 2015 season, one of my plants had an amazing 23 seed heads. What a result from one easy to sow sunflower seed - a long season of colour for me and a tasty autumn treat for the birds that visit my garden".- Kris Collins, T&M Gardening Expert

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Try toasting the seed kernels for a healthy snack. For more details about edible flowers click here.

1 Packet (20 Seeds) (52881)

Direct sow Sunflower seeds outdoors where they are to grow from April to May. Choose a position in full sun on well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly, at a depth of 1cm (1/2") in drills spaced 45cm (18") apart and cover seed with its own depth of soil to exclude light. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes up to 21 days. When sunflower seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12") apart.

Alternatively, sow indoors in individual 7.5cm (3") pots from March to April at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F). Once germinated, grow sunflower plants on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.

Feed and water sunflower plants regularly. Stake sunflower stems with canes to prevent wind damage.
