Tree Peonies are native to China and are an important symbol in Chinese culture. They are a hardy shrub that in spring becomes full of large flowers up to 25cm (10") or more in diameter. Mature specimens can have in excess of a hundred flowers and flower yearly with few problems. They are disease resistant and low maintenance. Tree Peony 'Tao Hong Fei Cui' has soft pink flowers that look wonderful planted alongside other types of peonies with different coloured blooms. The large flowerheads can be cut and displayed in vases. Height and spread: 150cm (60").

Culinary information: The petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy and the blooms can be floated in punches. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow tree peonies in sun or semi shade, in well drained soil. Choose a position that is sheltered from cold winds and shaded from strong early morning sunlight. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits at least 10cm (4") below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.

Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established. Remove faded flowers and cut back old foliage in autumn. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
