Pot up Verbena plug plants and grow them on in warm frost-free conditions for transplanting to their final positions later on. When plants are well grown, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant Verbena bonariensis in containers, beds or borders, in moist, well-drained soil in full sun.

Feed and water verbena plants regularly until fully established. In autumn, cover the base of the plant with a dry mulch such as bark chips or straw to protect the crown from winter weather. Place container-grown specimens against a wall or wrap the pot in bubble wrap or fleece to protect the roots. Cut back faded stems in the spring when new shoots start to emerge.
